COLONEL BRADLEY J. SMITH

 
Colonel Bradley J. Smith is commander, Phillips Research Site and Materiel Wing Director, Space Vehicles Directorate, Air Force Research
 Laboratory, Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. He leads a team of 941 military, civilian, and on-site contractors who comprise the nation's Center of Excellence for military space science and technology, research and development, as well as advanced technologies integration and demonstration. His organization manages an annual budget of $378 million focused on the mission thrusts of responsive space and counterspace and space-based command, control, communications, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

Colonel Smith was born and raised in Rochester, N.Y. and entered the Air Force as a distinguished graduate from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute ROTC program in 1986. He holds a Doctorate in Computer Engineering from the University of New Mexico, Master of Science degree from Boston University and Masters of Business Administration from Saint Mary's University. He is a resident graduate of the U.S. Army War College and Joint Forces Staff College.

Colonel Smith's assignments include deputy director of Engineering at the Air Armament Center, head of the Operational and Policy liaison in Washington for European Command and Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe during Operation Iraqi Freedom, chief spacecraft system engineer at the National Reconnaissance Office, High Power Microwave Program manager at the Phillips Laboratory in New Mexico, and a fellowship at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Draper laboratory.

Colonel Smith's previous assignment was as the commander, Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Systems Group, Space and Missile Systems Center, Air Force Space Command, Los Angeles AFB, Calif. DMSP Systems Group is the DOD's sole operational weather satellite system.
